Did you find a better price or make an offer!

Resetting your iPhone might seem as easy as tapping "Erase All Content and Settings," but if that’s all you do, you could end up either missing important steps or losing data you wanted to keep. Whether you're selling, trading in, or gifting your iPhone, there are a few key things you need to take care of first.

Let's break it down How to Factory reset iphone so you don’t miss anything.

Unpair Your Apple Watch First

If you’re using an Apple Watch paired to your iPhone, start by unpairing it. This wipes out the data on your watch and removes something called the Activation Lock, so the next person who gets the watch can actually use it.

The good news? Your iPhone automatically backs up your watch data before unpairing it.

To unpair:

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap All Watches (upper left-hand corner).
  3. Hit the info button next to your watch.
  4. Scroll down and select Unpair Apple Watch.

This is a must if you plan on selling or trading in your phone. Skipping this step could mean your data is still tied to the watch or worse, it could be unusable for the next person.

Back Up Your iPhone

Next thing you want to do? Backup your iPhone. Skipping this step is like walking a tightrope without a net. You'll lose all your data—photos, texts, you name it—if you don't save it first.

There are two ways to back up your iPhone:

Option 1: iCloud Backup (Easiest Way)

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Select iCloud, then iCloud Backup.
  4. Make sure Backup This iPhone is switched on.
  5. Tap Backup Now.

This is the simplest route because it’s wireless. It automatically backs up any time your iPhone is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi.

Option 2: Backup to Your Computer

If you prefer having a local backup, you can connect your iPhone to your computer and save everything there. Depending on the software you're using, here’s how you do it:

  • For Mac (macOS 10.15 or newer): Open Finder, plug in your iPhone, and find it under Locations. Once it pops up, hit Backup Now.
  • For Mac (macOS 10.14 or older) or PC: Use iTunes: After plugging in your iPhone, click the phone icon in iTunes (top left) and pick Backup Now.

If you’re on Windows 11 or newer, Apple has a new Devices app that replaces iTunes. You’ll only use one or the other, so don’t try to have both installed.

Cancel AppleCare+ If You Don’t Need It

Planning on keeping your phone in the family? You can probably hang on to your AppleCare+ plan. If you're selling or giving away your phone though, it's worth canceling.

Here’s how to cancel:

  1. In Settings, tap your name at the top and go to Subscriptions.
  2. Find AppleCare+ and tap Cancel.

If you’ve paid for AppleCare upfront, you can call Apple Support and ask for a refund—though no promises.

Sign Out of iCloud

Before you reset, you'll need to sign out of iCloud. This is especially important because it removes your device from your Apple ID account.

To log out:

  1. In Settings, tap your name at the top of the page.
  2. Scroll down and tap Sign Out.

Make sure you’ve got your password handy because you’ll need to enter it before logging out.

Deregister iMessage (If Switching to Android)

Are you switching to a non-Apple device like an Android phone? If so, you’ll need to de-register iMessage. Otherwise, text messages from iPhone users might disappear into a black hole and never reach your new device.

To turn off iMessage:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap Messages.
  3. Turn off iMessage.

If you no longer have your iPhone, don’t worry. You can also do this by visiting Apple’s Deregister iMessage page. Enter your phone number, and Apple will help take your number off their iMessage servers.

Perform the Factory Reset

Now, we’re finally ready to factory reset your iPhone. This wipes all your data and settings, returning your iPhone to the same state it was when you first took it out of the box.

Here’s how to reset your iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then scroll down to Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  3. Tap Erase All Content and Settings and follow the prompts.

After confirming, your iPhone will start the reset process. Give it a few minutes, and your iPhone will reboot like new.

Factory Restore Using a Computer

There’s another more thorough option called a restore that wipes and reinstalls the latest iPhone software. It’s the best choice if you want to make sure every bit of data and configuration gets completely wiped clean.

For Mac users running 10.15 or newer, you’ll use Finder:

  1. Plug your iPhone into your computer.
  2. Open Finder and select your iPhone under Locations.
  3. Click Restore iPhone.

If you’re using an older Mac or a PC, you’ll do this in iTunes (or Apple Devices app on Windows 11):

  1. Connect your iPhone, open iTunes or the Apple Devices app.
  2. Click the iPhone icon, then click Restore.

You’ll need to disable Find My iPhone before restoring, so make sure that’s already off. It’s a bit of a pain, but this ensures your phone’s ready for resale.

Conclusion: You’re Ready To Go

Factory resetting an iPhone takes a little more than hitting a button. With backups, unpairing Apple Watch, and canceling unnecessary subscriptions, you’re now set for selling, trading, or giving away your iPhone problem-free.

If you're planning on setting up a new iPhone, you're ready to roll, and if you're heading in a brand-new smartphone direction—happy switching!
